About This Opportunity

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2026–27 are offered by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to support talented individuals who wish to pursue doctoral studies at leading UK universities. This fully funded PhD scholarship aims to equip scholars with advanced research skills, knowledge, and expertise to address global challenges while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program welcomes candidates from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, ensuring a merit-based, non-discriminatory selection process. Scholars will conduct research across six development themes, including science and technology for development, health systems, global prosperity, peace and security, resilience to crises, and inclusion and opportunity. With full financial support, including a monthly stipend and family allowances, the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship provides students access to world-class mentors and research facilities. The initiative not only enhances academic excellence but also fosters international cooperation and leadership development. By aligning with UK national interests and global development priorities, the Commonwealth Scholarship 2026–27 empowers future leaders, researchers, and innovators to create meaningful change worldwide.

Requirements

  • Applicants must upload the following documents with the application:
  • Proof that they are a citizen of a commonwealth-eligible country.
  • A Copy of a Valid Passport
  • Full transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, including to-date transcripts for any courses currently being studied, with certified translations if not in English. Where any transcripts are missing or do not include all pages, the application will be considered ineligible.
  • References from at least two individuals, in PDF format, signed and on institutional letterhead or an email clearly showing the sender’s details.

  • The Commonwealth Scholarship will provide each scholarship holder:
  • Return Air Ticket
  • Covers Full Tuition Fee
  • Monthly stipend
  • Also covers the warm clothes allowance.
  • Thesis Allowance
  • Additional Study Travel Grants
  • If the candidates are widowed, divorced, or single parents, the scholarship pays the child £622 for the first child and £154 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16.
  • Additional allowance for a disabled person.

Eligibility

  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status in the above-mentioned country.
  • Permanent resident of one of the above-mentioned countries.
  • Be available to start academic studies in September 2026.
  • By September 2026, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honors standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree).
  • Provide all supporting documentation in the required format.
