About This Opportunity
The Humboldt Research Fellowship 2026–27 in Germany is a prestigious fully funded fellowship program offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for postdoctoral and experienced researchers. This international fellowship provides the opportunity to conduct research at a host institution in Germany for 6 to 24 months, with the flexibility to also pursue research stays in other European countries (except the applicant’s home country). With a monthly stipend of €2,670 for postdoctoral researchers and €3,170 for experienced researchers, along with travel expenses, medical and liability insurance subsidies, mobility allowances, family support, and intensive German language courses, the fellowship ensures full financial coverage. In addition, selected researchers receive a subsidy for research costs and become part of a global alumni network of more than 26,000 Humboldtians, including 49 Nobel Prize winners. This makes the program not only financially rewarding but also a strong stepping stone toward international recognition in the academic world.
To be eligible, applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent (completed within 4 years for postdocs or 12–16 years for experienced researchers with strong publications), have internationally reviewed academic publications, and secure a mentoring agreement with a German academic host. Proficiency in English or German is required depending on the research field. Applications are accepted online and undergo independent peer review, with selection meetings held in March, July, and November 2026. Successful applicants can begin their fellowship immediately or within 12 months after approval. With over 700 researchers supported annually, the Humboldt Research Fellowship in Germany remains one of the most competitive and respected fellowship programs in Europe, offering an unparalleled opportunity for researchers to advance their careers while experiencing German culture and contributing to global scientific progress.
