About This Opportunity

Applications are now open for the IST Austria Journalist in Residence Program 2026, a paid international fellowship for journalists from around the world. Hosted by the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), this unique program offers selected participants the opportunity to spend 3 to 6 months at the ISTA campus in Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, Austria. The program is designed to bridge the gap between science and society by supporting impactful journalism that highlights the importance of scientific research in everyday life. The ISTA Journalist in Residence Program 2026 will begin in the spring of 2026. Participants will receive a travel allowance and financial support for living expenses during their stay in Austria. There is no application fee, making it a valuable opportunity for professional journalists, science writers, and communicators who want to engage deeply with the scientific community and produce meaningful stories about innovation and discovery.   • Examples of your best work (any format)
  • Proposal of planned activities while at ISTA
  • Names of 2 to 3 research groups you wish to engage with during the residency.

Eligibility

  • Nationality: Candidates from all countries can apply.
  • Eligibility: The program is open to experienced science or technology journalists across all media formats (print, broadcast, digital, etc.).
  • Journalist Commitments: Accepted journalists are expected to contribute to the ISTA community by:
  • Hosting interactive media training sessions and workshops.
  • Participating in lectures and/or panel discussions to share their expertise in science communication.
