About This Opportunity

The OIST Visiting Scholars Program (TSVP) 2026 in Japan is a fully funded research opportunity at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) for PhD holders and independent researchers. The program lasts 3–12 months and covers round-trip airfare, on-campus accommodation, per diem support, office space, and access to world-class research facilities. Scholars can conduct independent research in fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computational sciences, and life sciences, with no teaching obligations. Up to 30 visiting scholars will be selected, with strong encouragement for women and underrepresented groups to apply. Deadline: 15 September 2025.

Requirements

  • CV (including list of publications).
  • Valid passport.
  • Transcripts/ degree certificates.
  • Research proposal.
  • A title and abstract for a general-audience talk.
  • Proposals for additional outreach activity, research seminars, short courses for graduate students, or career talks (optional but encouraged to submit).

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have done Ph.D in the relevant field.
  • Applicants should be independent researchers.
  • Candidates should have an academic position equivalent to senior postdoctorate, junior group leader, or faculty member at a research institution.
  • Applicants must submit all the required documents and materials.
  • Applicants should apply as “Experimental Visiting Scholars” who require access to a lab.
  • Researchers are expected to deliver a general-audience lecture about their field of research.
