About This Opportunity
The University of British Columbia Public Scholars Award 2026/27 is a funded opportunity for doctoral students who want to connect their research with real-world impact and public benefit. Offered by the University of British Columbia, this program supports scholars from diverse disciplines in building strong community connections through innovative and collaborative research projects.
The UBC Public Scholars Award is part of the Public Scholars Initiative (PSI), which encourages students to move beyond traditional academic research and contribute meaningfully to society. The program focuses on areas such as sustainability, health, education, environment, public policy, and social innovation.
Selected scholars can receive funding of up to CAD $10,000 to support research activities, professional development, travel related to scholarly work, and stipends where applicable. Each year, around 30 students from UBC Vancouver and approximately 5 students from UBC Okanagan are selected for this competitive program.
The Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia is located in Vancouver, a city known for its natural beauty, multicultural environment, and high quality of life. This provides students with a unique opportunity to study in a globally recognized academic environment while experiencing cultural diversity and community engagement.
Through the Public Scholars Initiative, participants become part of a strong interdisciplinary network. Scholars are expected to engage in PSI events, collaborate with peers, and present their work through academic and public platforms such as “PhDs Go Public.” These experiences help develop professional skills, expand career opportunities, and strengthen connections beyond academia.
The UBC Public Scholars Award 2026/27 is an excellent opportunity for doctoral students who want to create meaningful impact through research, gain international exposure, and contribute to solving real-world challenges in Canada.
