TOKAS International Creators Residency Program, Japan

TOKAS International Creators Residency Program, Japan
Tokyo, Japan
Deadline: Jun 16, 2026

About This Opportunity

Applications are now open for the TOKAS International Creators Residency Program 2027, a fully funded residency program in Japan for artists and creative professionals worldwide. Organized by Tokyo Arts and Space, this prestigious program offers creators the opportunity to live and work in one of the most vibrant cultural cities in the world.

The TOKAS International Creators Residency Program invites painters, filmmakers, designers, architects, and other creative professionals to spend three months in Tokyo developing their projects. It provides an ideal environment for artistic exploration, cultural exchange, and professional growth.

This fully funded residency covers all major expenses, including round-trip airfare, accommodation, daily living expenses, and a grant for creative work. Participants will also have access to shared studio spaces, allowing them to collaborate and engage with other international artists.

A key highlight of the program is the OPEN STUDIO event, where residents can present their work to the public and gain international exposure. This platform helps artists showcase their creativity and connect with a broader audience.

The residency is offered in multiple sessions between 2027 and 2028. To be eligible, applicants must have at least five years of experience in their field and must not be enrolled as students at the time of the residency (except PhD candidates).

The TOKAS International Creators Residency Program 2027 is an excellent opportunity for creative individuals seeking international exposure, artistic development, and cultural immersion in Japan. It is more than just a residency—it is a transformative experience that allows artists to grow, connect, and share their work on a global stage.

Requirements

  • You must stay at the residency for the full 3 months, without leaving.
  • You are expected to create work that will be shown during the OPEN STUDIO event and submit a final report on your project.
  • You may be invited to take part in a result presentation or other events, and you’ll need to support TOKAS’s promotion of your work.
  • You are not allowed to do any paid or commercial work during your stay.
  • Activities that create loud noise or strong vibrations are not permitted.
  • Only the selected artist can live in the residency space. Friends, family, or guests are not allowed to stay with you.

Benefits

  • You will get your own private room in Tokyo, or a shared room if you apply as a duo.
  • A shared studio will be available where you can work on your art.
  • Your round-trip flight to and from Tokyo will be fully covered.
  • You will get JPY 4,200 per day to cover your living expenses.
  • You will receive JPY 300,000 to support your art project.
  • Free Wi-Fi internet, library, and common areas will be available for you.
  • You can present your work to the public at the TOKAS OPEN STUDIO event.
  • You will have time and space to focus only on your art.
  • Your work will be seen by people in the art world.
  • You will meet artists from other countries and make new connections.
  • Living in Tokyo will let you explore Japanese life, art, and culture.

Eligibility

  • You should have at least 5 years of experience in your creative field—whether it’s visual arts, design, architecture, or related artistic fields.
  • You need to be able to communicate clearly in English, as this helps in working smoothly with other creators and TOKAS staff.
  • You should be independent and able to manage your daily life and creative work on your own.
  • If you’re applying as a duo, that’s fine too—but at least one person must be living outside Japan.
  • You cannot be a student when the residency begins. Ph.D. candidates are the only exception.
